The challenges we are working on
- To provide a stable supply of electricity, essential for the lives of local residents, in remote areas of Australia where the power grid is not well-developed.
- To secure highly reliable power generation equipment that can operate stably even in the harsh environment known as one of the hottest in the world.
Solutions to the problem
- We will build a hybrid microgrid combining solar power generation, battery storage, and diesel generators to supply a stable power supply to the entire region.
- Isuzu diesel engines, known for their superior performance in high-temperature environments, reliability, and fuel efficiency, are used in the generators, ensuring stable operation in harsh conditions and reducing life cycle costs.
Isuzu's products extend beyond commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses. Our powertrains, including industrial engines, are also used in a variety of applications around the world. Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) provides engines for generators, supporting local power supplies.
So, what kinds of places rely on these engines?
One example is Oudnadatta, located in the inland southern part of Australia. In 1960, Oudnadatta recorded a temperature of 50.7°C, matching the highest temperature ever recorded in Australia, and in recent years, it has recorded temperatures of 48.7°C in 2025 and 48.5°C in 2026, making it an extremely hot region. Located more than 1,000 km from the state capital Adelaide and about 200 km from the nearest town, this town has no power grid to supply electricity from the outside, and the lives of its residents are supported by local power generation facilities.
Previously, electricity was generated solely by diesel engines, but now a "hybrid microgrid" combining solar power generation, storage batteries, and diesel generators has been introduced, providing a stable power supply to the entire region.
Isuzu diesel engines play an important role in this system.
In addition to its reliability in stable operation even in high-temperature environments, it is also highly regarded for its fuel efficiency and lifecycle cost.
